The Science of Walking on Autopilot

autopilot

One of the joys of iFootpath is having access to more than a thousand UK walking routes, meaning there is always somewhere new to discover. Many of us also have our tried and tested favourite routes and, if you are like me, you may have four or five local dog-walking routes that you have walked hundreds of times. If so, have you noticed that sometimes you walk these routes whilst barely noticing your surroundings? It’s a bit like travelling to work, when some days you are not sure you can remember all the details of the commute. This always left me a little worried and wondering if a such a lapse of concentration might be unsafe. Well researchers at Cambridge University have put my mind at rest, with research showing that autopilot mode is a very normal part of our brain’s activity…

The Decline of Flying Insects

bee-on-flower
It is very easy to take the natural environment we enjoy on our country walks for granted, but scientists are continuing to report a worrying trend. Flying insects, including pollinators like bees and butterflies, continue to decline in numbers, despite schemes across Europe to support them. Perhaps we all need to do our bit in supporting these winged-workers to ensure the sustainability of our green surroundings…

Favourite Autumn Facts

autumnleafsquare
It’s that time of year when wonderful open fires, hot chocolate and boots replace the less attractive sunburn, insect repellent and sandals. While you choose your iFootpath walking routes and snuggle by the fire, here are some of my other favourite autumnal facts to keep you entertained…

osmington-white-horse
If you’ve never had chance to visit a chalk hill figure, then you are missing out on this enchanting phenomenon which is seen especially in England. Spreading the Walking Word for a Healthy Nation

brisk-walking-image
Two national news stories have caught my eye in the last few weeks, entirely different topics but both linked to the sad rise of inactivity that seems to be gripping the nation. The health impact of inactivity can lead to suffering in humans and canines alike, so maybe we should be trying to pair up buddies that might be able to help each other…
