The Science of Walking on Autopilot


One of the joys of iFootpath is having access to more than a thousand UK walking routes, meaning there is always somewhere new to discover. Many of us also have our tried and tested favourite routes and, if you are like me, you may have four or five local dog-walking routes that you have walked hundreds of times. If so, have you noticed that sometimes you walk these routes whilst barely noticing your surroundings? It’s that time of year when wonderful open fires, hot chocolate and boots replace the less attractive sunburn, insect repellent and sandals. There’s nothing better that a bracing autumn walk followed by getting cozy in a pub or at home. The Danes hold the wonderful feeling of coziness in such high esteem that they have their own word for it. Hygge can mean hot chocolate by the fire while it’s snowing outside, but it also implies camaraderie and intimacy: it’s a social coziness, a coming together with people we love, against the encroaching cold.
